The Objectives of ITMS

The ITMS project will deliver in its firs project phase (see TIMELINE) a prototype system for a new German CO₂, CH₄ and N₂O emissions monitoring and verification support capacity that can be implemented within the DWD operational systems as one of its service elements.

From 2022 to 2026 ITMS will work towards the following key objectives in order to develop the demonstrator system:

1. System to characterise, quantify, and monitor Germany’s GHG sources and sinks

2. Scientific verification and support of national inventory reports

3. Characterisation of sources and sinks:

   • Identification of regional hotspots
   • Quantification of diffuse sources
   • Differentiation of anthropogenic and natural contribution

4. Support of industry and policy advice on mitigation measures and support of other countries in developing GHG monitoring systems.
